Once again, we have come to the end of the week and since I don’t want any of you wasting away your time on meaningless netflix propaganda so I have selected a few documentaries and lectures for your entertainment and education.
The first one is by and on none other this generation’s best, something I don’t say lightly, but Shoshana Zuboff’s work on Surveillance Capitalism is just that book of the decade. In this documentary, Zuboff takes the lid off Google and Facebook and reveals a merciless form of capitalism in which no natural resources, but the citizen itself, serves as a raw material. How can citizens regain control of their data? Watch this.
I like Chris Hedges, always have even if I don’t agree with everything that he puts out but that’s not only ok but also important. In this clip Chris Hedges speaks at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on October 16, 2020. In this talk he examines the cultural and social forces that have given rise to extremism in the United States. He explores the myriad of factors that led to the proliferation of neo-fascist militias, extremist organizations, demagogic leaders, vast social divides defined by hate, a hyper nationalism and virulent racism as well as a mass media that has descended into burlesque and fans the flames of social disintegration. His analysis and conclusion are more than solid and very much worth your time.
Everything that needs to be said about Michael Parenti that needs to be said has already been done so and he remains one of the sharpest tools in my shed. I always do enjoy his dry sarcasm and snappy remarks about seemingly complex situations, and whilst this talk is rather specific in regards to linguistics, colonialism, history and so one it leads to some typically brilliant ideas & plans for the future.
Lastly, and how could I not end this with music, here is a two part documentary on none other than Fela Kuti, sure, as everything he touched this is political but first and foremost this is about music. If you have been listening to my playlists for the last 18 months you will know how much I enjoy his work and this documentary is also incredibly worth your time.
Now for some end of the week shit posting and then I’ll leave you alone until Monday.
