Morning Comrades.
If you are ‘of a certain age’ you will certainly recall the infancy of the current conservative movement, the nightmarish claims of the so called Moral Majority. The Moral Majority’s claims were disregarded as un-American by the real majority. Yet, today, we are living this and their dystopia.
The idea for this little rage dip into History came from reading up and watching the GOP and Conservative part of the US government - I know, an oxymoron as the entirety thereof is utterly conservative and for the most part brutally fascist - get warmed up for their presidential election next year. Now, whilst on surface level this examination seems to be very US focused the opposite is true. Not only does the US branch of their violently fascist ideology have branches and outliers around the world, but importantly, and all multipolar movements aside, when this giant catches a cold the world sneezes.
A lot, if not all of the insanity, or rather calculated radicalisation in service of capital at the behest of a culture turned violent, of the absolutely batshit crazy ideas, ideology and methodology most of us have witnessed since Bush Jr and the US Tea Party comes from this movement, the self-titled Moral Majority. They were and are neither.
The Moral Majority was an US political organization associated with the Christian right and Republican Party. It was founded in 1979 by Baptist minister Jerry Falwell Sr. and associates, and dissolved in the late 1980s. It played a key role in the mobilization of conservative Christians as a political force and particularly in Republican presidential victories throughout the 1980s. Even though their “movement” officially disbanded, their lessons, structures, moves and goals are omnipresent today.
