A few words of thanks before we kick off another week, we raised over 1500€ earlier this week that I dropped off at my local homeless shelter on Sunday. A massive thanks to everyone that picked up a piece from last weeks drop, this made a significant contribution to getting people fed, housed and looked after in what is transpiring to be one of the coldest winters here in a decade. Again, I am honoured to be part of such an excellent community and want to extend the heartfelt thanks from everyone involved, you helped greatly with your generosity.
A new week also means a new playlist! Without wanting to pat myself on the back too much, these last couple of weeks have all been bangers and this weeks playlist might just take the cake so far. Again, almost another 3 hours filled with some of finest tunes that I came across last week. There is a lot of new stuff on there that is also relatively new to me, with highlights such as The Teardrop Explodes, Sonic Boom and The Clockworks, as well as new songs from EyeHateGod and Cult of Luna, both of which slap hard! There are some classics from Elbow, Manic Street Preachers, Bohren, Mogwai and Peter Gabriel as well and all in all this is going to make you happy this week.
I am clearly very late to this show but thanks to my ever awesome ex-flatmate I finally started on this show and wanted to recommend this to anyone that hasn’t seen it. It’s genuinely honest and triggers all kinds of weird feelings worth looking into, such as memories of my high school time and how fucked up we all were- and despite everything else, how little and yet how much has changed in 25 years, the perspective of a father with a teenage boy heading into a world that I know oh so little about as well as a 42 year old refusing to grow up. It’s tough, but worth it.
Another tidbit from the weekend that I wanted to pass along for your enjoyment and contemplation is this text from Alyson Escalante that I read yesterday. The gender debate is something I am relatively new to and whilst shamefully having ignored it especially in regards to my PhD I am increasingly finding it a vitally important part of my research and this text, whilst certainly on the more extreme fringes of the debate is riveting and very much worth your time.
How To Be An Anti-Capitalist in a Capitalist World
Part of being actively Anti-Capitalist is also anti-fascist work, yes, that huge spectrum of work outside of confronting organized neo-nazi marches in your hometown. As most of you know I am massive metal fan and with that comes a responsibility to weed out the ripe problems that scene has with neo-nazis in our ranks. Kim Kelly wrote a most excellent piece on how to deal with that and this is a must read for everyone.
With that and not much further ado, some most excellent hot shots from this weekend.
Going to leave you with this most excellent piece out of the Soviet Union from 1973 entitled, “Basement with Supplies”.
Thank you for the Alyson Escalante piece!
